Obituary - The Reverend Charles Robertson, LVO

Company Chaplain (2005-2025) and Honorary Member, the Reverend Charles Robertson, LVO has died.

After his retiral from Canongate Kirk where he served as Minister from 1978 to 2005, Charlie became Chaplain of The Royal Company of Merchants of the City of Edinburgh.

He occupied this role until 2025, leading many Kirkings, Stated Meetings and other Company events during this period. To thank him for his contributions, he was made an Honorary Member of the Company in February 2025.

Reverend Charles Robertson gave many years of loyal service to the Company and will be much missed at The Merchants Hall.

Our Master, Grant Macrae OBE shares 'Charlie was well known to many Members of the Company and will be sadly missed. I have special memories of him conducting my Kirking Ceremony in St Giles in November 2024'.

Old Master Ian Watson recalls 'Charlie was a true character in every sense of the word, his delivery of the Company Prayer was second to none. His unique rendition of the words 'The sea is thine' will echo in the minds of Members for years to come.'

Charlie is survived by his wife Alison Margaret Robertson, children Duncan, Mary and Margaret, and grandchildren, Isobel and Katie.

The funeral will take place at 11.00am on Saturday, July 25th in Canongate Kirk, EH8 8BN. All are welcome to attend. You are encouraged to dress dark, but with a touch of colour. Retiring collection in lieu of flowers.

The service will also be live streamed at: www.westreamitfunerals.co.uk/robertsonc
